SwiftWorks has the technology, the technical expertise, and the resources to provide high quality subtitles for viewers of various languages.

Subtitling Style

Our style guidelines for subtitling are generally patterned after those set by the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST). We are also flexible to variations in subtitling style preferred by our clients, including style guidelines established by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) in the U.K.

The subtitles we produce are intended to accurately capture and convey the film dialogue in the required language of the viewer, presented in a manner that can be effortlessly read and immediately understood. Our primary objectives in subtitling are to:

  • Facilitate for the target viewer the same level of comprehension as that of viewers who directly understand the film dialogue

  • Maintain the film’s artistic integrity

Subtitle Master List

We produce subtitles in English and in any major European language. The master list or the subtitle template of the film is normally produced in English prior to translation into other languages. Because accurate translations may require more character space, our subtitle templates already incorporates in and out times based on the maximum permitted number of characters. This minimizes the need to truncate translations while ensuring that subtitle projection is always highly synchronized with film dialogue.

Our subtitles are normally based on scripts provided to us. If none are available, scripts can be produced in house by our Entertainment Transcription department. To facilitate accurate translation, added information is provided in the English script to explain the meaning of particular words or expressions that may be obscure to the translator.

Subtitling Quality Standards:

Our quality standards for subtitling are aligned with the Code of Good Subtitling Practice established for the industry by the ESIST.
